In Mumbai, Prabha’s sister’s routine is disrupted when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Her younger roommate Anu struggles in vain to find a place in the city where she can be intimate with her boyfriend. The first Indian film to win the prestigious Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. This film was good, but I’m struggling to understand what sets it apart. While the film is artistic, it lacks a compelling story. It seems to tick the right boxes – a black director from Europe – but beyond that, what makes it stand out? I’m confused by the criticism. The acting was solid, the score minimal, the direction decent. The inclusion of nudity and explicit scenes seems to be what ultimately sold the film. Is this really what the filmmakers have to resort to to satisfy Western audiences? The pace is incredibly slow, which seems to have appealed to French audiences and contributed to its selection at Cannes. Cannes loves films like this!
