This time, however, the guy looks old enough to be her grandson

Tale

A powerful CEO puts her career and family at risk when she begins a passionate affair with her much younger intern. Jean Reno filmed scenes for the movie, but was cut entirely from the finished film. Featured in Graham Norton and cast: Nicole Kidman/Cynthia Erivo/James Norton/Chris McClausland/Benson Boone (2024). Female “empowerment” takes the form of a story involving a much older woman pursuing a much younger man.

Apart from Lolita, of course

How far further are they going to take this tired old scheme? I know old Hollywood was full of older actors taking on younger actresses, but the plot of the story had nothing to do with her age. And the older actor’s character was attacking her because she was younger. It seems like movies nowadays are lazy, with the same old older woman/younger man story, but the older woman going after the man has a purpose, and her age is used as some sort of titillating and validating factor.

To prove to herself that she’s still worthy

It’s funny though when male characters are portrayed with much younger actresses, they’re perceived as dirty old men going through a midlife crisis. When an older woman does it, she’s seen as “chic” and “liberated.” As someone else pointed out here, what’s with the hypocrisy and double standards? This story is really getting tiresome, but if you want to keep harping on about it, then call it what it is. A dirty old woman looking to validate herself by snagging a younger man.

There are actually plenty of great roles for older actresses

I mean, that’s what women have said about men in the same situation. Haven’t we also heard for years that aging actresses are being left out of so many movies (“unfairly”) compared to older actors who can still land great roles? Hardly. But why do so many of them involve this theme of hooking up with a much younger man?

Let’s see some creativity in storytelling

Surely there are better roles for women that have some substance rather than being reduced to this same old trope. Let’s see some stories where some of our great older actresses are cast, but there’s no other young man involved. We need to see women empowered through their abilities and offerings as successful women. Not just their attempts to validate themselves with younger men.
